When the cats are away..........

Kali 2.0 and I are on our own this weekend. Mrs. Lime headed off with Blondie to go to a conference in California this weekend. Kali's grandma is in town to keep us busy and to make sure we don't get in trouble while Mrs. Lime is gone.

Last night, we headed out for an early dinner with Grandma and Papa. Kali skipped out on eating her burger, but she went to town on her broccoli. She ate every last bite of it, which impressed the grandparents in attendance. She also repeatedly told the waitress and everyone else willing to listen that she wanted orange juice. Thankfully, the magical juice was delivered and happiness ensued.

Random Kali 2.0 moments........

-Kali 2.0 can now climb into the jacuzzi tub without assistance. That tub has a pretty tall side on it. This girl has some LONG legs on her. One more good reason to learn how to shoot a shotgun in the next 8-10 years before the first boyfriend shows up.

-All those rumors about what happens to a child when you give them a big dose of sugar/candy? I can confirm that they're all true.

-I've been teaching Kali how to put away toys/books after we finish playing with them. If I ask her to do it, she says no. If I make it a game and 'play' too, she's gung-ho about it.

-When your daughter says 'diaper' and then points to her bottom and says 'poo-poo', it's a good idea to take her word for it and act promptly.

-Mrs. Lime has always been a big fan of pizza crust, while I rarely eat it. Mrs. Lime used to always eat my crust leftovers, but now she's got competition. Kali is a crust eater. The other night, I took a last bite off of the piece of pizza I was eating, leaving only the crust. Before I could even finish that bite, I heard Kali say 'here'. I turned to see her pointing at her plate. She was already telling me that I was supposed to put my crust on her plate so she could eat it.

-My mom used a coffee cup that had a snowman on it when she was in town over the weekend. Yesterday, Kali said 'Grandma!'. I looked over at her and she was pointing at the cup my mom had used two days before. Girl has a mind that just won't quit. It's scary.

-Kali watches me play video games on occasion. I have one game that is a war game with no gore. At one point, my character was 'killed' and went flying across the battlefield. Kali pointed at the screen and said, "Uh-oh". I said, "Yes, uh-oh is right." Kali's response: "Right!"

-Kali wanted to play with the drums and guitars the other night from my Rock Band video game. I started up the game and played one of the songs on guitar. Kali grabbed the other guitar and started pressing buttons while holding the guitar and dancing. She loved it.

-The other night, Kali and I were watching the nightly news while eating dinner. At some point, the newscaster came on and mentioned that Tiger Woods was back from his injury and would be playing in this weekend's tournament. No sooner than the reporter said 'Tiger Woods', Kali jumped up in her chair and yelled, "GO TIGERS!"

That's my girl!

Just call me Larry Bird........

I probably had my best basketball game this season in last night's appearance. I hit both of my shots from the field, hit all three of my free throws, and finished with 8 points. I also got two steals, 3 or 4 rebounds, and several floor burns on my knees from all the diving for loose balls.

It's hard sometimes, but I try to stay in my comfort zone where I can play well. I know I can shoot well when my feet are set. I have no issues diving for a ball. I can rebound when needed. I'm a good free throw shooter. Outside of that, I have to be very careful not to make bad decisions.

We have a few players on our team that play WAY out of their comfort zone, which usually ends up with us losing (we haven't won a game yet). I get the feeling that a couple of them wouldn't respond too well to criticism, so it's probably best to just continue to worry about myself. After all, it is just a rec league. Whether we win them all or lose them all, very few people will care in the end. It's all about running up and down a court for the sake of exercise.

Kali 2.0 checkup.........

Kali just had her two year checkup this morning at the doctors office. Other than a terrible case of the "NO's" that is associated with your child turning two, everything else checked out OK. I'm also proud to announce that in addition to having my fabulous good looks, she's also inherited my end of the height gene pool. She's three foot (36") tall, which puts her on pace for a height of six feet!

The search for a tall boyfriend begins........

What a way to start the day.........

I got into the office today and the new intern is bringing around some sort of cookie for everyone to try. It's some sort of sugar cookie with powdered sugar on top. I take a cookie and thank her for bringing it by. After looking it over, I lift it to my mouth.......

***SNEEZE***

Yeah, I've never seen powdered sugar spread that quickly. Long day ahead of me.

Visiting the (other) mouse.........

Random thoughts from our visit to Chuck E. Cheese yesterday.....

-If there's a misbehaving kid on a ride, you can be pretty sure that there's an unattentive parent who figures out the problem far too late.

-A mom walked in with 5 kids with the oldest likely only 10 years old. Mrs. Lime and I were impressed with her composure with the chaos surrounding her at all times. We both agreed that some people handle those situations better than others and we're smart enough to realize that neither of us are equipped to handle a five-child household.

-Children lose their mind when they're in a place like that. Kali would play a game or ride a ride and then immediately turn to scan for the next activity. You could see she could barely comprehend the full level of options available.

-I think we can safely say that Kali is not born to be a softball pitcher. We couldn't get her to throw a Skee-ball underhand to save her life. She'd fire the balls overhand, resulting in a 'thud' as the heavy ball hit the ramp. She's obviously meant for basketball or volleyball.

-If you go to Chuck E. Cheese on a holiday or weekend, be sure to go early. We were there by 10:45 AM and there was plenty of room. When we left around 12:45, there was a line of 75 people out the door. For what it's worth, most of them were at least smiling about the fun to come.

-Kali 2.0 likes mascots at a distance. She loved the animatronic Chuck E. Cheese, but when Mrs. Lime took Kali to see him, she wanted to keep her distance. I can't say I blame her. 5 foot tall rodents can be a bit imposing.

-Nothing is more exciting to a 2 year old than another 2 year old riding the same merry-go-round with them. Kali and another girl got on the ride together. They spent most of the ride smiling at each other, oblivious to the parents that were trying to get their attention. If only adults could make friends that easily.

-Mrs. Lime said the pizza was average. I mentioned that we didn't come to Chuck E. Cheese for the pizza. It's merely food to keep you going while you play the games.

-Kali napped for nearly 3 hours after we got home. Having fun can be very tiring.

Like a steel trap........

I came down to the kitchen after taking a shower on Sunday morning. Mrs. Lime had put three 'pigtails' in Kali 2.0's hair. Each of the pigtail holders had a princess picture on them. There was Cinderella, Belle, and Ariel. All three of the pigtails were in places where Kali couldn't see them. I looked at Kali and mentioned that I thought her pigtails looked awfully nice.

Kali grinned and pointed to the left side of her head. "Cinderella!"

She then pointed to the right side of her head. "Belle!"

She then pointed to the back of her head. "Mermaid!"

She was right on every single one. She had remembered from several minutes earlier precisely where Mrs. Lime put each of the princess hair holders. Mrs. Lime and I both looked at each other in astonishment. That girl is SCARY smart.

Is this really the 15th one?

On February 14, 1995, I celebrated my first Valentine's Day. As much as it would be nice to play up the romantic nature of that first time, I seem to remember that I was more worried that I got something that Mrs. Lime would like more than anything else. Ah, the joys of dating.

Now, we're doing Valentine's Day for the 15th time. When you've done it that many times, the meaning of the day changes. Early in your relationship, you're just trying to find a way to avoid screwing up. Now, you're trying to find a way to show your significant other just how much you appreciate them.

I gave an unusual Valentine's Day present: I had 2 dozen roses delivered. Not unusual, you say? Ah, you don't know Lime well enough. I've always brought Mrs. Lime roses throughout the year at random times. There's no better thing than to bring home roses 'just because' rather than because it's Valentine's Day. Plus, you can give roses several times a year with the money that you'd spend on roses for just one Valentine's Day.

So, long story short, I sent roses to Mrs. Lime this year and she was pleasantly surprised. Hopefully, I'll have to make a decision on Valentine's Day presents for years to come. However, I will reserve the right to just give her a kiss once I reach 90 years of age. A man has to set some boundaries, don't you think?

Interactive movies.........

I'm sure the neighbors wonder what the heck is going on at our house in the evenings.

As I've mentioned, Kali 2.0 is a big fan of 'High School Musical'. It's quickly become one of our more interactive play-time experiences.

1. There's a song in one of the rehearsal scenes where they they 'bop, bop, bop' a whole lot. Kali's a huge fan of the 'bop' song. She'll just spin around and keep saying 'bop' over and over again during the whole song. I have no clue how she manages to not get too dizzy.

2. Now that Kali has a basketball goal, she's quick to point out whenever someone is playing 'ba-ke-ball' in the movie. She'll yell it repeatedly until you acknowledge that she is correct.

3. The big finale song is called "We're All In This Together". It's quickly become Kali's version of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Some examples....

-Whenever the Wildcat mascot comes on the screen, we both point at the Wildcat and scream 'Wildcat' repeatedly until he leaves the screen.

-The dancers raise their hands in the air a lot during the song. Kali or I will shout out 'Raise hands!' and we both raise our hands every time the dancers raise their hands.

-When the drum line starts playing, it's time to 'march'. We'll march around the house until the drum line finishes up.

-Lots of clapping. Kali will clap through much of the song. I've even noticed recently that she's attempting to actually clap on beat. It's still a work in progress, but she's got time to work that out.

Kali 2.0!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today is Kali's big birthday. She's now officially 2 years of age.

Kali is the best thing that's ever happened to me (I doubt Mrs. Lime will feel too slighted by this comment). Being a good parental role model while giving a child unconditional love is a tough balance that requires constant refinement as you progress. It's never easy, but always rewarding. It's also made me a MUCH better person.

While it was tough initially as a new dad to take care of Kali when Mrs. Lime was working in the evening, I've quickly found it to be a blessing. Kali and I have a great bond together because we're able to spend so much one-on-one time with each other. While Kali is a momma's girl whenever Mrs Lime enters the room, it's a totally different dynamic when it becomes just Kali and I. It's really difficult to explain, but we just get along really well and have a great time together. Mrs. Lime will even vouch that it gets a bit roudy when we get together. Mrs. Lime walked into a Kali dance party last night in the living room.

I'm very thankful for everything that Kali has brought to our lives. She makes it very easy to love her. It's a wonderful blessing.

Zaire Taylor just bought a piece of history........

Mizzou managed to pull out a win against Kansas last night, thanks to the last second heroics of Zaire Taylor. He hit a clutch shot with one second left that will be replayed for years to come, much like the Corey Tate game-winning shot in the late '90s.

I'm honestly somewhat disappointed in the win, as we really should have beaten them by much more. Our defense was great through the whole game, holding the Jayhawks to 30 points each half and forcing 27 turnovers. The problem was that the Tigers came out TOO psyched up and just shot like a team that was nervous for much of the first half. Thankfully, the effort started paying off in the second half and we pulled out a memorable win.

Great win for the Tigers!

Jerry Springer Redux.........

An update from my last post. My co-worker found out that he is the biological father of his daughter with 99.9999% accuracy. He's elated to say the least and I'm elated for him.

Real life Jerry Springer........

So, you know those Jerry Springer shows where people fight over whether a kid that they've raised for a few years is really their kid? Well, one of my co-workers is dealing with that scenario.

He has a 2 year old daughter. He and his wife have filed for divorce after 18 months of marriage. He's a nice guy who jumped into a relationship without seeing the warning signs just because his girlfriend at the time was pregnant. What he has found out since filing for divorce is that his wife literally got her divorce from a previous husband only a few weeks before they were married. As a result, they are unsure whether the child is even his child.

It's a terrible situation, as he is very close to his daughter and vice versa. I can't even imagine the thought that you'd invest 2 years of your life raising a child only to find out that it wasn't your child. You'd then have to reconcile your relationship going forward and what the courts would allow as far as parenting rights go. That's just nuts. I'm REALLY hoping that he's the dad because he's a good guy who got caught up in a bad situation. He doesn't need this mess.

As Kali 1.11 says, RRROOOAAARRR!!!!

I generally try to stay away from current event posts, but far too excited to do that tonight. The Mizzou basketball team got a HUGE win tonight in Austin against Texas. MU is now off to their best start in 15 years and is probably on their way to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 5 years.

I had a friend that I met through a Mizzou message board that died earlier this week at 36 years of age. Terrible to pass away so soon, but I know he would be extremely proud of our Tiger team tonight. Jeffrey, we're going to be back in the dance, baby! Enjoy the good seats where you are.

The Kali Choice Awards............

Kali's a huge movie fan. She usually watches one of her favorite movies in the afternoon each day. She's learning a ton of things from them. One thing I've noticed of late is that she's repeating words on the movie or in some cases, she's even saying the words/lines even before the character says them. Her vocabulary is exploding right now as a result.

I thought I'd give a quick rundown on her current top 5 movies.......

1. Beauty and the Beast - It's been around for over a decade, but it's easily one of the best. Vivid artwork, great story, and songs that are all upbeat and easy to sing along with at home. I don't get tired of watching it and neither does Kali.

2. Enchanted - This is a more recent Disney movie that's not quite as well known, but it's a lot of fun. The story (which begins as a cartoon) is that a pauper girl is saved by a prince and they decide to get married the very next day. The stepmother of the prince, who is also a witch, doesn't want that to happen and dumps her down a well that leads directly to Times Square in New York City. The rest of the movie is live action and is a spoof of many of the Disney fairy tale movies. Great songs and characters.

3. The Little Mermaid (and associated sequels) - A few months ago, Ariel was easily her favorite movie/character. That's waned a bit, but she's still a big fan. Diverse characters and varied songs.

4. High School Musical - No, Kali has not seen the sequels, but she likes watching and dancing to the original. I think the song scenes really help her understand dancing quite a bit. She loves spinning around during the songs.

5. Madagascar 2 - This was Kali's first movie that she saw in a theater. It's coming out on DVD today and will definitely be entering the rotation on the DVD player. The animation is great and there's lots of scenes where the animals dance (which is a big plus in Kali's eyes). It's got a few good 'adult' jokes tossed in just to keep the parents interested.

Honorable mention goes to 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarves' and 'Sleeping Beauty'. She likes both of those movies, but they often get left out of the rotation.

Hawaii: Sea Life Park........

We took Kali 1.11 and Gwen 1.8 over to Sea Life Park while we were in Hawaii. It's a local wildlife park that tries to educate people about sea life and what they can do to help those animals thrive.

Kali was interested in feeding the turtles.......

To end the day, the girls got to see the dolphin show. The great part about this dolphin show is that the background setting is the ocean. Funny story about the next three pictures. My mom was setting next to me and when the dolphin was about to jump, my mom would say "Now!" indicating me to take a picture. My mom evidently forgot that I purchased a camera that takes three shots a second. Usually, I had already snapped off two photos by the time she said "Now!". Ah, for the days when you always 'just missed' the perfect photo. Best $500 I ever spent. Not only did I get a great photo, I got the entire jump..........

As a sidenote, we did get Uncle Mark to touch a sea urchin and a sea cucumber, so he can't say that he's never done that anymore. Lots of fun for the girls to see these animals up close. I think they had a really good time.
