I grew up in a house that had 13 steps from the basement to the main floor. Something obviously didn't work out there. In order to counter that issue, I took precautions to make sure I never used all 13 steps.
When walking up the stairs, I always skipped the first step. So I only took 12 stairs going up.
On the way down the stairs, I always jumped over the last step. So I only took 12 steps going down.
I have 18 stairs in my new home. No bad luck there, so no need to skip stairs. Mrs. Lime doesn't have any issues with the number 13 as she lived on the 13th floor of an apartment building for several years. I guess she's braver than I am. I can't handle any flirtations with the number 13.
