Surprises for Kali 0.2.........

Kali 0.2 got the shock of a lifetime (albeit only 6 weeks long) when she went to the doctor's office yesterday. The otherwise quiet visit to the doctor turned bad very quickly when the doctor gave her 4 shots (2 in each thigh) as part of her 6 week checkup. Mrs. Lime reported that Kali was not very amused and put on a pretty good screaming show. I'm sure that the doctors just hate doing that to a baby, but it's part of the deal obviously. I'd rather she scream now for a few minutes rather than getting sick several times down the road.

I got a haircut yesterday. I hadn't got my haircut since Kali was born, so a major hedge-clipping was needed. The lady that cut my hair was very nice. I mentioned my baby and she noted that she had a 9 year old boy. I told her I thought I was older than her and that I was 32. She said she was 29 and had the baby when she was 19. She said she obviously loves her kid and doesn't have anyone to blame but herself, but she wouldn't have had a kid that early if she would have had that choice again. I honestly couldn't have done the baby thing that early in my life. I'm sure I would have managed if I did, but that's a rough way to start adulthood. I'm not even sure I'm capable of parenting NOW, but that's another story and a whole lot of therapy. I digress.

I got home for 'Daddy Night'. That would be the nights where Mrs. Lime has to work, so I'm in charge of the baby. It's always an 'exciting' night when I'm in charge. Mrs. Lime asked the doctor about general dad feelings after the baby is born. On more than one occasion, I've stated 'If only I had a breast......'. To some extent, I don't think that moms realize how nice it is to have a food dispenser handy at all times. As a dad, you've got to be a little more creative in your entertainment and feeding selection.

So, here's roughly how the night went......

6:00 PM - Mrs. Lime heads into her office to work. Kali and I stare at each other momentarily.

6:01 PM - I ask Kali to try to be a good girl tonight so her dad won't be overly stressed out. Kali responds with a laugh that obviously indicates she's going to make it rough on her dad.

6:05 PM - Kali starts fussing. Dad goes into panic mode. Only 5 minutes?????? The honeymoon period is over.

6:10 PM - I put Kali in her favorite bouncer seat. She smiles and is happy.......for now.

6:15 PM - More fussing from Kali. She's already bored of the current circumstances. I put a Elmo play-center in front of her and she's happy again. She's amused by Elmo's dance and jumps every time Elmo surprises her with a 'peek-a-boo'.

6:30 PM - Fussy again. Elmo's no longer good enough entertainment. I take in Kali to the office to see Mrs. Lime. She likes the glow of the monitors.

6:35 PM - Fussy again. Casanova is bored as well, so I decide a walk is in order. Kali and Nova are both big fans of walking, so we head out.

6:55 PM - We're a pretty good distance from the house and Kali starts to fuss a bit. We turn around and head back towards the house, much to Nova's disapproval.

7:10 PM - Back at the house and we head back in to watch Survivor.

7:15 PM - Hit pause on Survivor as Kali is suddenly hungry.

7:30 PM - Snack time is done. Kali is very angry, but after a couple of large burps, she feels a bit better. Back into the bouncer seat with me sitting directly in front of her, talking about the news of the day. We covered the Iran prisoner crisis, Elmo's influence on the world, and the fact that Opening Day for baseball was only a couple of days away. She liked the idea of going to a game, so a trip to the park this summer with Kali and Mrs. Lime is pretty likely.

7:50 PM - Fussy again. I entertain her as best I can.

8:15 PM - Survivor is over and Kali has decided to take a nap.

8:20 PM - Load up a movie to watch.

9:20 PM - Still watching the movie, but my fussy arch-nemesis is awake again.

9:30 PM - Got her calmed down and finish watching the movie.

10:00 PM - Movie done. Kali requests more food. I give her the bottle and she eats a bit. Thankfully, Mrs. Lime will soon be on break and she can give her a good feeding before she goes to bed.

10:30 PM - Mrs. Lime comes in to rescue us. Feeding time! Kali smiles!

11:00 PM - Feeding done and Kali is out. I take her up to the crib and she starts to fuss a bit. I leave her in the crib as I've figured out that she will go to sleep if you just leave her be.

11:15 PM - She's out for good. Whew.

2:45 AM - Guess who's up again???? Mrs. Lime just got off work and swings into action.

5:15 AM - I wake up and Mrs. Lime tells me to be very quiet as she's had trouble keeping Kali asleep. Ah, just another night in the life of a parent.

'Moral' legislators make me just cringe.......

Last night, the Kansas legislature narrowly approved a bill to OK state casinos in Kansas. The governor is expected to sign the bill. What amazes me is these comments from an opponent of the bill in the Kansas City Star this morning.......

For opponents, it was a bitter defeat, and one they said will haunt the state in years to come. They predicted more crime, gambling addiction and bankruptcies as money is siphoned to casinos.

“You are forever changing the face and culture of Kansas,” said Sen. Karin Brownlee, an Olathe Republican, who called her no vote the most important vote she had ever cast. “I can’t do that.”

Senator Brownlee is totally oblivious to reality in regards to compulsive addicts. In this case, gambling addicts. I can assure Senator Brownlee, who obviously has her head in the sand, that her vote doesn't make a lick of difference in the grand scheme of things. Addicts will find ways to satisfy their addiction no matter how far they have to go to do so.

Let's take an example of a gambler in Kansas right now. We'll call him Bob. Bob is a gambling addict who likes to play poker and slots. Senator Brownlee is telling the world right now that if the Kansas Senate had voted no on this legislation, that Bob would have been saved from himself because the state wouldn't be providing a government-sanctioned way for Bob to act on his impulses.

Senator Brownlee, you wouldn't know the truth if it hit you in the face. I can guarantee you that Bob is going to satisfy his gambling cravings whether that bill was passed or not. Bob has lots of options. He can drive to Missouri or Oklahoma to gamble, where there are multiple casinos open to the public. That's money going right out of the Kansas state bankroll into other states. Even in your own state of Kansas, there are Indian casinos open on reservations.

There is also something called the Internet (perhaps the senator has heard of it) where Bob can play any casino or card game he wants. The money in that case leaves Kansas and goes overseas. The federal government has "stopped" the flow of money into those institutions, but I can assure you that if someone is addicted enough to gambling, they'll do anything including finding a way around the rules regarding deposits to overseas gambling establishments. The Democrats in the U.S. Congress right now are trying to repeal that amendment that was put in by Senator Frist because they realize how unenforceable that law really is at this point. Banks are refusing to fund the new software to block the payments. They want the government to pay for it and, of course, the government doesn't want to do that. They obviously didn't consider the consequences of their law before they put it into place.

As far as bankruptcies which the opposition said will increase if the casinos were allowed in the state, those are going to happen whether Bob is gambling online, in other states or in the state of Kansas. A no vote wouldn't have changed that either way. If Bob doesn't get help IF he is out of control, he's going to go bankrupt no matter what. That's a simple fact of addiction.

The opposition of the casinos also suggested that crime would increase in the state. As I said before, if Bob flies off the deep end and kills someone because he lost all his money, it won't be because casinos were approved in Kansas. He would have lost that money either way, whether in Kansas or somewhere else. Crime in regards to gambling will actually decrease. You'll have less people engaging in illegal gambling because a state run alternative is in place.

Senator Brownlee, you need to stop playing the role of the 'moral police' and start making changes that can help Bob IF he wants help. The state of Missouri actually takes a certain percentage of casino income to fund programs that help addicted gamblers. You also now have a perfectly legitimate reason to send a bill through to request increased funding for programs that help gamblers who have a problem. That's where you can make a difference. Resisting a casino bill only routes gamblers to other states and all of the revenue associated with that gambler.

Also, there are many more people that don't have a gambling addiction who simply want to have a place for entertainment. Those people should have the option to spend their entertainment dollars in the state of Kansas instead of having to go out of state to do the same thing.

Senator Brownlee, I encourage you to dismount from your moral high-horse and engage the reality surrounding gambling addictions. You can help the people of your state that have these problems, but voting 'No' on this bill will not make any difference in regards to the reasons you cited.

'Dunlop' in the house!!!!!!!

OK, this situation just begs to have a blog entry........

At our office, they run the wiring for all network and phone connections through the drop ceilings. If someone needs to access the wiring, they simply get up on a ladder, move the ceiling tile to the side and route the wiring down to whatever cube or room it's needed.

We just moved to another floor in our building. I was one of the unfortunate ones to receive a cubicle that was just set up. That means that I don't have network and phone jacks in my cubicle at this point. There's a cube next to me that has network access. Thankfully, that lady is out on vacation this week, so I took a network wire and ran it under the cube wall to hook to her network connection. So, I'm basically doing the same thing as stealing cable TV from your neighbor in order to get some work done until I can get my own connection.

There's a repairman that is now up on a ladder trying to sort out the various cables and get something hooked up for those of us without a connection. This repair man appears to run about 5'6" and 300 lbs. So this man is heading up a ladder above the cubicle walls and is in open view of most of the workers in this area. Currently, he's reaching up into the ceiling. Unfortunately, he decided to wear a shirt that barely covered his waist even when he was standing on the ground. So everyone in the area is now being treated to quite a memorable view. Basically, his head and arms are in the ceiling looking for wires. Meanwhile, his shirt tail is going up to reveal plumber's crack in the back and a 'dunlop' belly that 'done lopped' over his pants by at least 8 inches.

I'm guessing that there are a lot of office workers in this area that have just decided to skip lunch at this point.

Signs a mechanic isn't reliable, Volume 2.......

I was driving through the city yesterday on the way to pick up my laptop computer after some warranty work. Great day to be out and about as it was 75 and cloudy. Perfect convertible weather. You have the benefit of a great temperature while not having full sunlight to cook your head. Yes, I'm losing my hair and it's a good way to burn the top of my head. Soon I'll just buzz that hair off, making it very easy to apply sunscreen to the top of my head so I won't have to worry about baking my dome anymore.

As I drove down the highway, I notice a truck on the side of the road with its hood up. Obviously he's having engine troubles of some sort. As I get closer, I notice that the guy standing on the side of the road is actually wearing a work shirt. This guy is a mechanic! Better yet, as I get closer, I quickly realize that the truck is a work truck for an auto garage in the area!

Now I'm no genius, but I do have multiple degrees in business-related fields along with a masters degree in common sense. I'm thinking the last thing you want to have happen if you're an auto garage owner is to have one of your trucks with your garage name plastered on the side of the vehicle break down on the side of one of the busiest interstates in the midwest. I'm thinking that mechanic and his broken-down truck drummed up a lot of business for every other garage but the one he worked for in the time he sat on the side of that road. I'll file this incident away in my file of 'things that I should remember when starting a business'.

More sleep and baby-sitting tests...........

Good night for everyone involved. Kali 0.2 is starting to jump into a routine that Mrs. Lime likes. Kali has slept from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM two out of the last three nights. The other night, she was a bit fussy, but still slept for 5 hours in a row. I don't suppose you can expect too much out of a 6 week old quite yet. She's doing well overall.

Mrs. Lime is working tonight, so yours truly gets to jump back into the saddle. It's not too easy taking care of the baby without a dairy cannon mounted to my chest, but I do my best. Mrs. Lime helps me out with some milk in a bottle here and there and I've also become good friends with the formula can. It's wonderful how quickly the mood of a baby can change from fussy to smiling with something as simple as 2 ounces of formula.

Kali 0.2 also loves to go on walks. She often ends up falling asleep, but she always smiles when you sit her down in the stroller seat. Casanova loves the increase in walking as well. There's an abundance of dogs in the neighborhood, so he loves to go out and see all of the dogs. It's been really nice lately, with temperatures in the mid-70s. The rides home from work are better now as well since I can put the top down most days. The first day I rode home with the top down was a bit wild as there was Casanova fur flying all over the place. The car was blown pretty clean that day and I've had no fur problems since.

I'm starting up my monthly poker game again as well after a brief baby hiatus. It'll be nice to get back into a regular routine. I know that some of the players have been asking when we're going to play again. Mrs. Lime can get back into having parties at the house again and I can get back to losing $10 a month to people I actually invite over to my house. Who knew you could have so much fun inviting people over to take your money from you in your own home?

Kali gets her first extended babysitter time on Saturday as I'm hosting a fundraising poker tourney and Mrs. Lime will be playing in it as well. There's not too much risk involved as we'll only be a couple of blocks away from our house, but it's always a big step for the mom after being attatched to the baby (physically and mentally) for so long. Mrs. Lime's parents have been begging for the opportunity (mostly her mom), so they'll finally get their shot.

I have no doubt that Kali will run them over. We're likely to return to the house after a few hours to find a basket on the front step with Kali in it. They'll be an attached note that says, "We've retired from baby-sitting. Thanks for the opportunity."

Busy weekend.......

I haven't posted in couple of days because I've been doing a lot of baby care lately. I had the day off on Friday and spent most of the day taking care of the baby. Mrs. Lime took a nap. Nothing all that exciting. Mostly just feeding, playing and diaper changing. Standard fare.

Saturday was a bit more exciting. Mrs. Lime worked in the morning, so I was left in charge again. Just played with the baby and fed her some. After Mrs. Lime was done with work, she and Kali 0.2 went up to the gate house in our subdivision. They had an Easter egg hunt for all the neighborhood kids. The Easter Bunny himself was even in attendance. I went off and hit some golf balls while they were going to the egg hunt.

After the egg hunt, Kali, Mrs. Lime and Casanova took a walk around the neighborhood (it was really nice out; around 70 degrees). I came back by the house and we went out for lunch with some friends. We came home for a bit and Kali and Mrs. Lime took an afternoon nap.

At 6:00 PM, we headed over to another friend's house for a cookout. They have two girls named Macy (4 years old) and Kaylin (2 years old). Both the girls got to hold Kali and get their pictures taken. The girls were very excited to see the baby and Kali watched every move they made while they were playing.

We got back around 9:00 PM and fed Kali. She had 'tanked up' (i.e. ate a lot as she does before bedtime) and was ready to go to sleep. It didn't take much work to get her to sleep and she slept from 10:00 PM to 5:25 AM this morning. It's officially a Kali record of 7 hours of sleep uninterrupted! Mrs. Lime was very happy with that and actually woke up once during the night (probably thinking it was odd she hadn't woke up yet) only to find the baby still asleep. I'm sure she won't sleep that long every night, but her mom was certainly happy to have the rest, even if it doesn't always work out that way.

Meetings are fun........

Mrs. Lime, Kali 0.2 and I went to the annual homeowners' meeting last night. Kali was the star of the show before the meeting. Lots of people in their 50s and 60s attending the meeting and all of them wanted to take a peek. One of the ladies came by to chat while taking a look at Kali.....

Lady: How cute! How old is she?

Me: She's 5 weeks old.

Lady: Oh, she is just precious and so well-behaved.

Me: Well, we'll see how long she's well-behaved. I'm sure she'll fuss at some point.

Lady: Well, she can fuss all she wants and that's just fine!

Although I did have to walk Kali around during the meeting, she was very quiet and slept through 2/3 of the meeting. Everywhere I would look around the room, there were people taking glances over their shoulder to take a peek at the baby. I'm not sure what it is, but babies make middle-aged and older people absolutely giddy.

The meeting was typical homeowner meeting stuff. People fussing about how trees are planted, which flowers are planted, who's got outlawed vehicles in their driveway, etc. As I told Mrs. Lime afterwards, it's always good to have people who make a scene at those kinds of meetings. They annoy you when they do complain, but they generally keep the subdivision developers honest and that's always a good thing.

Shout-out to Dubya......

I just noticed that President Bush is going to be a couple of miles from my house today speaking about energy-efficient hybrid vehicles. Mr. President, I hope you drop by my house to say hi and see the new baby. If you don't have time to do that, I understand.

Also, thanks go to President Bush for leaving town at 3:00 PM so I don't have to worry about any traffic jams waiting for his motorcade to pass through my commuting route. I'm glad he took me into consideration, which he obviously did as I voted for him in 2004.

Random questions for thought.......

-Does the act of unknowingly wearing a jacket to work that has spit-up all over it make someone officially a dad? If so, count me as a dad starting right now.

-If you see an auto repair shop that has 'Fresh Flowers Available Here' posted on their sign, is that a good sign that their auto repair may not be exactly what you're looking for? If so, I've found that place.

-If your dog starts blowing you off in the morning when you ask him if he want to go outside, are you losing disciplinary control of your household? If so, I've lost control.

-If your baby laughs when you're singing a stupid song to her, is she laughing AT you or laughing WITH you? I'm not sure I want to know the answer to that.

-When you're taking care of a baby for an entire day, why does the day seem to pass so quickly? Thank God for nap time or I wouldn't have even noticed that Sunday bothered to show up at all.

-When a group is moved to new offices at work, is it a bad sign that people are finally throwing away papers from 2001 that probably haven't been viewed SINCE 2001? Some people just need to stop printing things for no good reason.

-Is it sad that I'm rooting for Hillary Clinton to be the democratic nominee so I know that we'll have another republican president? Probably just practical more than anything, as I can't afford to have a democratic president who will excessively tax my family simply because we're TOO successful.

-What are the odds that you get to see two squirrels fight and two rabbits fight in your backyard on the same day? If you were me yesterday, there was a 100% chance of seeing that. For what it's worth, Casanova loved watching it all unfold.

-What are the odds that a baby will have to go #1 or #2 at the moment when you're changing her diaper? Judging from my own personal experiences, I'd put that number around 70%.

-Why do birds suddenly appear every time you are near? Because you're hair resembles a nest.

-How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? Answer: 5.

The midnight battle zone.....

I'm not sure that there's a more combative couple at bedtime than Mrs. Lime and I. I'm not sure if we've never got over the fact that we're now sleeping in the same bed or what, but we fire knees, elbows, feet, hands, etc. at each other all night long in our sleep. I swing my arms, bring up my knees and other various things that often end up landing a square shot to Mrs. Lime. Mrs. Lime has also flipped over a few times and landed a square shot to my face.

I'm guessing this is some kind of a situation where we somehow vent our frustrations overnight which allows us to be the overwhelmingly wonderful couple that most of you see during our waking hours.

It wasn't me!!!!!!

A couple of amusing notes.....

-Last night, we were laying in bed and had just put the baby in the crib. A few minutes later, we heard a loud fart in the room. Mrs. Lime chuckled and then there was silence. After 30 seconds or so, Mrs. Lime turned to me in the bed and said, "Was that the baby or the dog???".

Poor Nova. He can't catch a break around here.

-I got up this morning and took care of the baby for a few hours so Mrs. Lime could get some rest. I mixed up a bottle of formula for Kali 0.2 for a morning feeding. I fed Kali and then set her in her chair while I went into the kitchen. I grabbed a can of pop and went back in to play with the baby. After about 15-20 minutes of playing, I reached over to pick up my pop with one hand while holding the baby with the other hand. Imagine my surprise when I went to drink my pop and ended up with a baby bottle nipple in my mouth!

I will say that they need to add some carbonation and some cherry flavoring to that formula before I'll ever drink another drop of it, accidentally or otherwise. I don't know why Kali even drinks that stuff.

A sale of unique proportions.......

In our lunch room, in addition to the large stash of previously read romance novels that the ladies put in their when they're through reading one of the books, there are often things being advertised for sale. Today, as I walked through the lunch room, the items for sale were.....

-A Sonic fundraising discount card

-Several used computer servers

-A entertainment center cabinet with a 50" projection TV

-A pink prom dress

-A turquoise prom dress

-A Harley-Davidson motorcycle with 2,700 miles on it

Garage sales have nothing on my lunch room. I can get anything from a motorcycle to cheesy tots at Sonic right here in my own workplace! This is what makes the U.S.A one of the greatest countries in the world.

One more piece in the baby puzzle......

Another parenting lesson was taught to me the hard way last night. Mrs. Lime did her first night of regular work last night. She worked from 8:00 PM to 4:00 AM. So that left me in charge of the baby.

We've actually got Kali 0.2 to the point where she will take the bottle and drink both formula and breast milk from the bottle. That's a really nice advantage to have as we can interchange her between breast-fed and bottle-fed pretty easily. So I was armed with 6 oz. of breast milk and lots of formula for the night ahead.

I headed up and started to feed the baby and all went well. I fed her about 3 oz. of formula and she sucked it all down. Only one problem......she wasn't falling asleep like she usually does. It seemed pretty odd. She began to fuss a lot and wouldn't take the bottle. That usually means she either has to burp or has some gas on the back end. So I tried to burp and pat on her back. No luck. She started fussing even more and still wouldn't take the bottle.

Next move is to start trying some stuff to figure out what the issue is. I headed down and grabbed some breast milk out of the fridge. She continued to cry and wouldn't drink a drop of it. Hmmmmmm. Next step was to head over to Mrs. Lime and try some breast feeding. Kali latched right on and was asleep in a couple of minutes.

It's not the optimal situation, but we may have to do that for a bit. The good thing is that she'll eat out of the bottle until full, but in some cases may need the comfort of Mrs. Lime for a couple of minutes to put her to sleep. In the next couple of months, she'll reach the point where she sleeps for 6-8 hours or longer and then we won't have this issue.

Comedy at its finest......

Big day yesterday as Kali 0.2 had her one month birthday. She's growing like a weed. Amazing how quickly they start growing with increased arm length and legs as well. She's a bit more aware of her surroundings as well. She's focusing a bit better as time goes along, though you can tell that her focus is very limited in that she gets bored of almost anything in a big hurry.

For example, Kali 0.2 likes to be entertained on the changing table. I, as the officially hired entertainment of the changing table, serve in an entertaining capacity. I will note that she doesn't pay very well, as my only compensation is usually a dirty diaper.

I feel somewhat like a vaudeville act in that I have to provide a wide variety of entertainment to keep her attention. I usually start with a joke about some sort of animal. From there, I can move to a serious topic so she actually learns something during a given diaper changing. After that, a funny face can draw an easy smile. Finish it up with a joke about just how dirty that diaper was and how impressed you were with how heavy that dirty diaper was and you have a well rounded comedy routine fit for any baby in the world. It's guaranteed to make your baby happy! In fact, I may put out a self-help DVD to assist future parents.

Here's an example of how things usually go......

Me: Kali, did you hear what one cow said to the other cow when he got in the way? He said 'Mooooooooooove over!'.

Kali:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Me: Kali, just remember that Daddy has goofy baby photos of you. He can use those to embarrass you in front of your friends if you get out of line.

Kali:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Me: But I have no doubt that you'll have embarrassing pictures of Daddy as well. ***sticks tongue out at Kali***

Kali:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Me: OK, diaper change is all done. Did you have help in making that mess in the diaper or did you do that all yourself?????

Kali:

Ah, yes. As long as she's happy, I'm not concerned with just how bad my comedy routine is.

That's really early.........

I must be some sort of glutton for punishment. Over the weekend, Daylight Savings Time went into effect. Dubya bumped up the DST so it actually occurred 3 weeks earlier than usual this year. That's find by me as I like to have more daylight in the evenings.

The problem is that I usually work the morning shift from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM. It's a great gig as you get out of work nice and early. You get to avoid any traffic issues on the commute and have time after work if needed to run errands on the way home. But when the 'spring forward' comes in March, it doesn't seem like such a fun thing. I wake up around 5:20 or so normally. Right after the DST changes, that 5:20 AM actually feels like 4:20 AM because you're not adjusted for time yet.

So you'd think that my body wouldn't be fully adjusted and that I'd be startled awake by the alarm when it went off so early this morning. Right? Evidently not. I actually woke up 13 minutes BEFORE my alarm was supposed to go off. You've got to be KIDDING me. Of course, since I realized that my alarm was about to go off, I failed to go to sleep for the last few minutes. Thankfully, I did notice when it was 5:19 and got up a minute early so the alarm wouldn't actually go off. We've still got the baby in our room for another couple of weeks, so I avoided waking up the baby. Hopefully she slept longer as a result. We'll have her in the nursery soon and then we won't have to worry about her waking up because of the alarm.

The circle of (my) life...........

Seems like I'm busy doing a whole lot of nothing right now. When taking care of the baby, as soon as I finish feeding, burping, cleaning up spit-up and changing the diaper, the whole process starts all over. The main battle is figuring out what's needed when the baby starts fussing and the best way to rectify the situation in a big hurry. I think I'm getting better, but it's still a work in progress.

I got the baby to sleep around 10:30 last night and she didn't wake up until around 3:30 AM, so I think I did pretty well there. Mrs. Lime went to bed early, so she was able to get some good sleep, though I did have to shoo her off at one point when she woke up and tried to help rather than letting me take care of things and getting the sleep she needed. Motherly instinct, I suppose.

My Mizzou Tigers lost a tough game last night. Mizzou didn't shoot really well and the other team was hitting everything. That usually ends badly for the team that's not shooting well. With that said, they still won 6 more games than last year and are definitely improving. Hopefully they get a chance to play in the postseason this year as well. My mood was further hindered by the fact that my surrogate team, Maryland, also lost in the first round of their tournament. Bad basketball day for me.

Today's the last day of my first week back since having the baby. I stayed up late to take care of the baby twice this week and still feel pretty good, so that's probably a success. I hear it gets better as you go along except for the nights when the kid is sick.

Right now, Kali 0.1 thinks farting while Daddy is holding her is a very funny experience. I expect she'll think that's funny for quite awhile. Hopefully Al Gore doesn't blame my daughter for global warming anytime soon.

Kali 0.1 meets her future friends........

We live near a family that has three young girls ranging from 8 to 2 years of age. I'm sure at some point that Kali 0.1 will be good friends with them as she'll see them on a regular basis. I noticed all the kids were out playing and I mentioned to their mom that we had just had the baby recently. She knew that we were expecting and was excited to get to see the baby.

Mrs. Lime and I headed walked over with Kali to see the girls. Casanova followed us over and was just as excited to see the girls as they were to see him. They all got to see Kali as well and she was wide awake, checking them all out. Per the usual, she received lots of compliments that she was a very cute baby.

Wonderful weather we're having right now in KC. The high temperature the last couple of days has been around 70 degrees. I even rode home yesterday from work with the top down. Really nice to have good weather this early in March. Mrs. Lime's ready for the cold weather to go away.

Kali destroys a diaper........

I changed Kali 0.1 diaper at some point during the night. I went back downstairs and settled back into the couch to enjoy the evening. After a few minutes, Kali started making 'diaper noises'. Nothing to be concerned about......or so I thought.

15 minutes after I changed the diaper, I went back up to check her diaper. I've never seen a mess like I saw then. She had filled the entire diaper, front and back, in 15 minutes. Guess she was saving up until Dad had her. I think there may be some sort of 'poopy' conspiracy. Mrs. Lime keeps complaining that she never gets a poopy diaper. I have plenty of poopy diapers. My guess is that Kali and Mrs. Lime have some sort of unspoken agreement. Leave the poopy diapers to Lime and they'll get along fine. I don't agree with this arrangement, but I'm not sure I have much say in the matter.

Back to the basketball court.......

Got to go out and play some basketball last night. It was nice to get out and play for the first time in quite a while. I had it a bit rough as I'm out of shape and they were playing full-court. But I was surprised to find that my shot was still there. I made some bad plays due to fatigue, but I scored quite a bit and made a few good defensive plays as well. Defense was not emphasized in this league, so I figured it was a good thing that I even made as many hustle plays as I did.

Running pretty much non-stop for over 1 1/2 hours was a bit rough, but I did pretty well. The first 20 minutes or so were the worst. I was sucking air pretty badly early on, but I actually felt stronger as I played. It may have been that the guys around me were getting tired and slowing down more than me, but either way, it felt good to be pretty strong at the end of the session despite being out of shape.

Hopefully it won't be nearly as long until the next time I get to play.

More baby stuff.....

Kali 0.1 did not show her worth as a MU fan today. There's a chant at the games where one side of the stadium chants M-I-Z and the other side replies Z-O-U. I decided to try it with Kali. I looked at her and said 'M-I-Z'. She replied almost immediately with a very loud gaseous emission from her back end. Daddy and Kali still need to work on that cheer evidently.

Kali also lost her first gun battle. Because Mrs. Lime was working this morning, I fed Kali some formula so Mrs. Lime could work without interruption. That meant that Mrs. Lime had lots of milk stored up because she hadn't fed Kali in a few hours. Kali began to nurse and I told Mrs. Lime that I was going to go up and shower. I hadn't made it more than to the top of the stairs when Mrs. Lime started yelling for help. Evidently, Kali began to nurse and then detached for some reason. With the large store of milk still there, she continued to spray milk after Kali detached, resulting in a face-full of milk for Kali. I came down to find Kali's whole face wet with milk. Mrs. Lime said it was even more amusing in person.

We had grandparents and friends come by to visit today. They all came by to see Kali and, of course, she slept through most of the visit. But people seem to even like seeing her when she's asleep, so it's not too big of a deal. She doesn't have to do too much to get lots of attention.

The breast milk diaries.......

Kali 0.1 woke up around 8:30 pm as she usually does, ready to eat before falling to sleep for the night. I took her up to change her diaper. It felt like a lead weight when I took it off. She obviously had wet that diaper a few times over while she was sleeping. I told her a few jokes while she was on the changing table. She laughed a couple of times, so obviously my jokes are pretty good.

Took Kali back down to Mrs. Lime. She fed for over 30 minutes. Great news for us because when she feeds a lot right before bedtime, we usually only have one wake up call during the night. Mrs. Lime wanted me to change the diaper again, so I headed back up for another diaper change.

We headed back up to the changing table. Took off the original diaper and just as I grabbed a new diaper, I heard the sound of something coming out of the wrong end of a baby. I quickly put the diaper underneath her. I looked up and she was smiling at me, obviously amused by my hurried motions. Thankfully, I got that diaper under there, because she proceeded to drop a huge mess on the diaper, wearing a smile the entire time.

After disposing of the dirty diaper that wasn't even worn, I put a new diaper back on and headed back downstairs. Mrs. Lime was eating some food, so I entertained Kali in the meanwhile. She wasn't laughing at my jokes as I talked with her, though she had a look of concentration on her face. I quickly found out that it wasn't a look of concentration, but rather worry. She suddenly squinted and proceeded to deposit an ounce or two of breast milk on her outfit and my clothes as well.

So we headed up for another visit to the changing table. Diaper had to be swapped out again as it caught part of the spit-up. I tossed Kali's clothes as well as my shirt into the dirty clothes hamper and got out a new outfit for her. With everything back in order, we headed back downstairs.

After having spit-up some of her late night dinner, she suddenly began to make sucking noises and stick out her tongue. That's the calling card that she's hungry. After losing some of her dinner, she was ready for a refill before heading to sleep. There was only one problem. After shedding my spit-up covered shirt during the latest diaper change, my child was suddenly getting some grand ideas. She was looking at my chest and was ready to breast-feed on Dad! I quickly handed Kali off to Mrs. Lime and informed Kali that she would be quite disappointed with my milk output. She happily headed over to Mom and fell asleep after refilling.
